Abstract: In the paper an analysis of civil structures as elements of the passive safety systems of the AP1000 nuclear power plant is presented. The steel containment vessel, the shield building with the PCCWST tank, the air baffle and the CA01 and CA03 structural modules are characterized. It is shown that these structures are not limited solely to a load-bearing role, but co-create the passive safety systems. A comparison with Generation III and III+ reactors and experience from the construction of the reference units indicate that prefabrication is the critical stage of project delivery, and that the benefits of modularization depend on the maturity of the supply chain. In the context of the planned construction of three AP1000 units at Lubiatowo-Kopalino, this means that the key challenge for Polish industry is to build the appropriate technical competences and to meet the requirements of nuclear quality assurance systems.
Keywords: AP1000; passive safety systems; nuclear supply chain; nuclear constructions; modularization.
